The whales could be seen from the cliffs from the town center from as early as June. People used to hunt whales earlier but now whale hunting is prohibited in this area. The Old Harbour Museum presents many displays which teach you the whaling history of Hermanus.


Hermanus is well connected with other cities of South Africa through the R43 highway, R44 highway and N2 Freeway. Hermanus is just 115km southeast of Cape Town. The scenic beauty of the coast can be enjoyed on the R44 route. The R43 highway continues further south to Cape Agulhas, the most southerly point of South Africa. Gansbaai city is situated just 40km from Hermanus and this place is very popular for the sea diving experience. Here people can dive amongst the Great White Sharks.

Enjoy Whale watching experience:
As talked about earlier, Hermanus is particularly famous for the whale watching experience. Lots of nature lovers, nearly 100,000 of them, visit this city every year during the annual whale festival which is held during the last week of September. The whale watching season begins from the month of June and it continues up to December every year. A few of the popular whale species that are spotted here are the Southern Right Whales, Humpbacks and Bryde Whales. Tourists can hire special Charter boats to venture out in to the sea so that they could get a close view of these remarkable sea creatures. Whales can be viewed even from the land. There are many spots on the cliff top area from where vacationers can have a clear view of the whales swimming by.

 

Shark Cage Diving:
Yet another significant fascination is Great White Shark cage diving, that is based 50 km's around the shoreline at Gansbaai. This really is "the place" in the world to perform this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
